Devout socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) says that the world will stop spinning in a dozen years if “climate change” is left unchecked. Ocasio-Cortez is pushing a new plan in Congress she calls her “Green New Deal” to confront climate matters. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rejects left-wing calls to force Pelosi to hold a Medicare for All vote in exchange for her vote for the Speaker Eliza Relman.
- Ocasio-Cortez says the world will end in 12 years. She is absolutely right.
- The fight will last for many years.”. The group has been met with skepticism from Ocasio-Cortez and others on the left who are suspicious of the effectiveness of the group’s viral video.
'This is a technique of the GOP, to take dry humor + sarcasm literally and 'fact check' it. Like the 'world ending in 12 years' thing, you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal. But the GOP is basically Dwight from The Office so who knows,' wrote AOC in a tweet published on Mother’s Day.

For context, Ocasio-Cortez first spouted the hyperbolic claim in January at a Martin Luther King forum in New York City, as The Daily Wire previously reported. She said it without laughing, earned a round of applause from the progressive audience, and then emphasized the point by calling the fight against Climate Change “our World War II.”
“I think the part of it that is generational is that millennials and people, in Gen Z, and all these folks that come after us are looking up and we’re like, the world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change,” charged AOC. “And your biggest issue, your biggest issue is how are going to pay for it? — and like this is the war, this is our World War II.”

“Climate change is here + we’ve got a deadline: 12 years left to cut emissions in half,” she captioned a tweet promoting the video, last month.

Climate change is here + we’ve got a deadline: 12 years left to cut emissions in half.

And where are we going?

The video, titled “A Message From the Future with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” showcases a future where AOC’s widely-panned and uber-expensive Green New Deal has inspired action to save the planet. In the video, the Democrat — you guessed it — again says that we have a “12 year deadline,” The Daily Wire reported:
The congresswoman then warns that we have “twelve years to change everything” before “hundreds of millions of people would be more likely to face food and water shortages, poverty, and death.”
“Twelve years to change everything,” she narrates. “How we got around, how we fed ourselves, how we made our stuff, how we lived and worked — everything. The only way to do it was to transform our economy, which we already knew was broken.”
Moreover, as reported by The Washington Free Beacon, Ocasio-Cortez doubled-down on her 12-year declaration during an Instagram live-stream when a viewer mocked her over the claim.
“We have twelve years left to cut emissions by at least 50 percent if not more,” Ocasio-Cortez, visibly annoyed, told her viewers. “For everyone who wants to make a joke about that, you may laugh, but you’re grandkids will not, so understand that the internet documents everything.”
“She then went on a tangent about looking back in history books of the civil rights movement and seeing the white people holding signs against allowing black people to vote,” the Beacon noted.
“They would hold up these bigoted signs and they would hold up signs that said things like ‘What about white rights?’ and all of this stuff in the 1950s and 1960s, so just know that in the present day there are a lot of people who hide the fact that their families and that their grandparents fought against principles of equal rights in the United States, not 100 years ago, not 80 years ago, but in this generation’s lifetime,” said the elected rep.

“While a lot of people can hide that their grandparents did that in the civil rights movement, you should also know that the internet documents everything and your grandchildren will not be able to hide the fact that you fought against acknowledging and taking bold actions on climate change,” Ocasio-Cortez continued. “People who are trying to mock and delay this moment, I mean—I just feel bad for you. I just pity you for your role in history right now.”
So many people have left New York over the last year that the state is in danger of losing a seat in Congress ahead of the 2022 elections — and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) seat is reportedly the one New York legislators are looking to drop.
Business Insider reports that New York leads the nation in population exodus. Between July 2019 and July 2020, “126,000 people moved out of New York state,” and New York now leads the nation in population loss.
“New York has been losing residents since 2016, according to the data, but this year was the most significant drop by far. The second biggest year-to-year population drop for the state this decade was between 2018 and 2019 when more than 80,000 people left the state,” the outlet notes
The coronavirus pandemic may be to blame for recent moves, but New Yorkers have been leaving the state in droves for years.
Bloomberg reported last year that New York City, the state’s largest city, “was losing 376 residents per day to domestic migration in 2019 — an increase of more than 100 per day from the previous year — before it became the epicenter of the country’s virus outbreak in March this year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest survey of population shifts.”
New Yorkers aren’t even moving far. The New York Post reports that “the post office received 295,103 change of address requests from March 1 through Oct. 31, according to data the Post obtained from the U.S. Postal Service under a Freedom of Information Act request. While many city dwellers decamped to Long Island, New Jersey, Westchester, and Connecticut, others scattered across the country.”
“The Postal Service data shows only the destination ZIP codes and counties where more than 10 New Yorkers forwarded their mail — and it points to places like Park City, Utah; Jackson, Wyo., and Brattleboro, Vt.,” the outlet notes.
California and Illinois both lost population, led by their own largest cities. Los Angeles and Chicago both saw “daily departures in the triple digits” and both have been hemorrhaging residents since at least 2017.
Because 2020 was a census year, states who had major population losses and gains will begin the process of “apportionment” in 2021 — reconfiguring Congressional districts to better align with population shifts. New York lost so many residents since 2010 that it’s likely to lose a seat in Congress.
According to The Intercept, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district may be the one on the chopping block, but the Democratic Socialist is prepared to put up a fight to keep her spot.
“In 2014, New York approved a constitutional amendment establishing a nonpartisan redistricting commission, which is set to take over the redistricting process starting in 2020,” the outlet reported. “The 10-member commission, meant to be independent from the legislature, is made up of individuals selected by leaders from the state Senate and Assembly, and the original eight members pick two additional members.”
That commission is made up, largely, of state-level Democrats who, The Hill noted last year, believe Ocasio-Cortez isn’t a team player because she’s focused on national elections and not state party politics — or state party fundraising, a typical expectation. She’s also focused on building a national presence and it’s reportedly been difficult to keep her focused on her local constituents.
If she does get redistricted out, it’s possible that she could primary a national Democrat, even Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
