Rotten Tomatoes is an American review-aggregation website for film and television. The company launched in August 1998 by three undergraduate students at the University of California, Berkeley: Senh Duong, Patrick Y. Lee, and Stephen Wang. The name 'Rotten Tomatoes' derives from the practice of audiences throwing rotten tomatoes when disapproving of a poor stage performance.

On the film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, a set of films have a 100% approval rating.The percentage is based on the film's reviews aggregated by the website and assessed as positive or negative, and when all aggregated reviews are positive, the film has a 100% rating.

Since January 2010, Rotten Tomatoes has been owned by Flixster, which was in turn acquired by Warner Bros. in 2011. In February 2016, Rotten Tomatoes and its parent site Flixster were sold to Comcast's Fandango. Warner Bros. retained a minority stake in the merged entities, including Fandango.

Why It's Rotten

1. The problem with the website is that it mainly takes reviews from other sources. (e.g, Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel, Washington Post, etc.) This leads to many instances of extremely inaccurate scores.
   • Ghostbusters (2016) has a 74% and Mother! has a 69% despite both being critically panned.
   • A lot of movies covered on Greatest Movies Wiki almost always have mixed or negative scores. Those include Pokémon: The Movie 2000, Scoob!, Bohemian Rhapsody, TMNT (2007), Despicable Me 3, Looney Tunes: Back in Action,The Lego Ninjago Movie, Gnomeo and Juliet, Smurfs: The Lost Village, Space Jam, Balto, and the list goes on.
   • Pokémon Heroes got a 17% critic score, even though it was praised by many Pokémon fans and not by critics despite the unintentional accident where it faced competition with The Matrix Reloaded.
   • Instant Family got a 81% critic score.
   • Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones has a 66% critic score despite some fans calling it the worst installment of the franchise.
   • Kim Possible has a 100% critic score, despite receiving backlash from fans of the original show.
   • After Last Season Got a 92% despite the movie being considered one of the worst movies ever made.
   • Hook has a 28% critic score, though Rotten Tomatoes later admitted that it was a good film that had a rotten score, so in other words, they contradicted themselves.
   • GTFO: Get the F&#% Out has a 100% critic score, despite having a 38% audience score, due to corrupt critics (Dennis Harvey of Variety, Miranda Nelson of Georgia Straight, Josef Arbiv of FILMINK (Australia), Cody Ray Shafer of Under the Radar, and Joanna Robinson of Vanity Fair), as well as the Anti-Gamergate and SJW propagandas.
   • Leaving Neverland has a 98% despite receiving heavy backlash by fans of Michael Jackson.
   • All 4 seasons of Riverdale have at least an 80% despite its cringy writing.
   • Godzilla: King of the Monsters got a 41% score just because it focused more on the kaiju characters than it did on the humans, since the whole charm of Godzilla is to see giant monsters fight each other and destroy their surroundings.
   • Rambo: Last Blood got a 27% score, despite having a 82% audience score, just because it has Rambo killing Mexican villains and out of political bias, wrongfully accusing it of xenophobia and calling it Trump propaganda.
   • Plan 9 from Outer Space has a 67% score even though it is considered one of the worst movies of all time.
   • Cuties has an 85% score (even though it has a 14% audience score), despite receiving backlash for sexualizing 11-year-old girls.
2. The audience scores are no better.
   • Every time a Marvel or DC movie is released, the audience score always starts off extremely low such as 37%. Because of this, there's a bit of arguing on Greatest Movies Wiki or Awful Movies Wiki on whether the movie should be on either of the two.
   • Gotti has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but at the time of its release it had an 80% audience rating. This was later changed to a 46% audience rating.
   • Watchmen (the 2019 TV series) has a 54% rating on the site despite the show being mostly well-received; this was because the obsessive Anti-SJWs review-bombed it.
   • Uncut Gems has 52% despite being well-received by many.
   • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has a 86% rating even though it got mixed reviews from fans with some calling it worse than The Last Jedi.
   • Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues has a 52% rating despite reviews being mostly positive.
3. The rotten reviews' synopsis tries way too hard to be funny or use generic persuasions such as 'stay away from this movie' (one such example that uses a generic synopsis is The Human Centipede 3: Final Sequence). It can also come off as insulting to those who enjoyed the movie.
4. Sometimes, there's invalid reasoning for why the critics didn't like a well-received movie. For instance, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse had a rotten review that broke its 100% score streak that called the animation 'sloppy' which was later deleted for unknown reasons.
   • Another famous example is Toy Story 3, which destroyed the chances of it being the only trilogy to get perfect 100% scores by two negative reviews: one by a troll that was quickly deleted, and one by a critic who thought it was too scary for a G rating.
5. In January 2010, the New York Film Critics Circle claimed that this website was an example of how 'the Internet takes revenge on individual expression.'
6. The Disney Star Wars films' critics and audience scores (especially The Last Jedi) are one of the main reasons why the Star Wars Fanbase is in such turmoil.
7. They made a big stink about the instances of users review bombing the 'Want to See' scores on titles like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (was known as Star Wars: Episode IX at the time) and Captain Marvel. Rotten Tomatoes announced that the 'Want to See' score would no longer be visible during a movie's pre-release period and people would not be able to comment on a film's page until it releases, thus removing some of the userbase's voice.
8. Rotten Tomatoes also played a major role during the Alita: Battle Angel vs. Captain Marvel flame war. Not only did the former get a 61% against the latter's 78%, but before either film released, users could not add Alita to their 'Want to See' lists despite being able to add Captain Marvel.
9. The audience scores are often ignored. Instead of Rotten Tomatoes being a website that gives care to both critics and audiences, it panders to the critics and ignores everyone else.

Redeeming Qualities

1. The website does learn from its mistakes.
2. They sometimes give accurate scores to movies.
   • Avengers: Endgame and Iron Man both have a 94% critic score.
   • Disaster Movie and Alone in the Dark both have a 1% critic score.
   • Avengers: Infinity War has an 85% critic score.
   • Saving Christmas (AKA Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas), Deep Blue Sea 2, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, United Passions, and Jaws: The Revenge all have a 0% critic score.
   • Battlefield Earth, RoboCop 3 and Jack and Jill all have a 3% critic score.
   • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has a 84% critic score.
   • Ready Player One has a 72% critic score.
   • The Cat in the Hat (2003) and Fantastic Four (2015) both have a 9% critic score.
   • The Emoji Moviehad a 0% critic score before eventually getting bumped up to 7%.
   • Parasite has a 99% critic score.
   • All of Studio Ghibli's films (except for Tales From Earthsea ) have at least a Fresh to Certified Fresh rating, with most of them having at least an 85% and over.
3. Movie critics such as Chris Stuckmann did get their own reviews on Rotten Tomatoes such as him claiming that Dragonball: Evolution was his worst movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes.

On the film review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, films that every surveyed critic considered bad have a 0% rating.^[1][2][3]The Ringer, analyzing films' Rotten Tomatoes scores compared to change in profit margin, estimated that films with a 0% rating 'would be expected to lose about $25 million relative to its budget'.^[4]
